Tokyo Gyoko (Imperial visit to Tokyo) (東京行幸)
Tokyo gyoko are the imperial visits to Tokyo which were made twice in 1868 and 1869. It is also called Toko.
On September 3, 1868, Emperor Meiji issued 'the imperial edict to rename Edo to Tokyo' and declared that he would administer the affairs of state in Edo and Edo would be renamed Tokyo. On November 26 of the same year, during the first visit to Tokyo, the Emperor entered the Edo-jo Castle, which was renamed Tokyo-jo Castle. After that, the Emperor returned to Kyoto once, and on the second visit to Tokyo the next year, he settled down there.
